Pannonia Bio, Europe's largest biorefinery, is expanding its innovative range of organic products to support circular agriculture with the Pannonia Grow organic soil fertilizer, made from maize, which can be used by both conventional and organic farmers to improve soil quality.

Use and characteristics of Pannonia Grow

Containing 7% nitrogen, Pannonia Grow can be used for soil improvement in orchards, market gardens, vineyards and arable crops. It protects against leaching while increasing the soil's water retention capacity, which is particularly important to bridge the increasingly long periods of water scarcity and drought caused by climate change. Pannonia Grow contains a high proportion of micronutrients, with a high organic matter which supports the proliferation of micro-organisms, increases yields and helps to maintain and enhance soil biological activity.

The production of Pannonia Grow

In the plant, feed corn kernels are broken down into their constituents during processing. The starch is turned into bioethanol, the protein and oil into animal feed, and the fibre into a range of other products. One of these is the fuel for Pannonia Bio's biogas plant: wet fibre is used to produce valuable methane gas through anaerobic fermentation. The sludgy mass of valuable nutrients that remains at the end of the fermentation process, the fermentation juice is post-treated and used to make pelletized organic soil fertilizer, Pannonia Grow.

Suggested dosage

In orchards

  • For young plants: 500-700 kg/ha in late autumn or spring
  • For fruiting crops: 700-900 kg/ha in late autumn or spring
  • Berry crops: 700-900 kg/ha in late late autumn to early spring
  • In vineyards: 500-700 kg/ha in spring or autumn

For vegetables

  • Spinach: 1,500-1,800 kg/ha before cultivation
  • White/red cabbage: 2,000-2,500 kg/ha before cultivation
  • Legumes: 600-900 kg/ha before planting
  • Tomatoes, peppers: 900-1,100 kg/ha before planting
  • Pumpkins: 700-900 kg/ha before planting

For arable crops

  • Potatoes: 1,000-2,000 kg/ha before planting
  • Maize: 1,400-1,700 kg/ha before planting
  • Sugar beet: 900-1,300 kg/ha before planting
